Red Kite is a pan-European Danish/English and Italian quintet led by pianist Esben Tjalve. Founded in London, the musicians in the quintet have all played together for more than a decade and are on tour to promote the launch of their new album 'Popludium' (Babel Label) the follow-up to the critically acclaimed album 'Theory of Colours'.
Trumpeter Fulvio Sigurta now based in Italy is a member of the Italian group Extended Singularity and his playing style is described as "unhurried grace and controlled fire reminiscent of the late Kenny Wheeler and fellow Italian trumpeter Enrico Rava".
Hannes Riepler is a well-known face on the London jazz scene and his guitar playing is deeply rooted in the jazz tradition; contemporary and melodic, but always immediate and hot, freewheeling at times and swinging in a New York Downtown style.
Esben Tjalve as well as being the leader of Red Kite is also a member of the Danish trio Human Being Human who has recently recorded an album with American saxophonist Chris Cheek. He prioritises melody and lyricism in his compositions and playing, which contributes to the accessible yet thought-provoking nature of his music.
Jasper Høiby's bass playing is characterised by a dynamic, commanding, and highly energetic approach to the double bass, combining technical virtuosity with a strong emphasis on melodic depth and infectious grooves. He is known for pushing the boundaries of the instrument beyond a simple time-keeping role.
Drummer Marc Michel's playing style is defined by his subtlety, sensitivity to dynamics and space, and a "chamber music" approach to ensemble playing. Primarily rooted in jazz, he is a versatile musician known for bringing both fire and depth to his performances.
"A feature of Red Kite is each member's instinct about when to play freely in counterpoint, or hold back with minimal accompaniment; solos are a collective effort with one member leading the way". The music of Red Kite draws the maximum out of each idea and element in a piece. The instrumentation with trumpet, guitar, keyboards, piano, bass and drums creates a colourful and cinematic musical universe that is unpinned by a strong groove from the rhythm section.
"Tjalve's writing draws the maximum out each idea and element in a piece." Mike Collins - UK Jazz News
"Pleasingly melodic but also deeply rhythmic, easily digestible yet subtly challenging, and just full of good ideas allied to exemplary playing." The Jazz Mann
".....every track contains an abundance of beauty and originality, with serene melodies and subtle arrangements which give plenty of scope for improvisation." Peter Jones, London Jazz News.
