Following Riaan Vosloo's Commotion's two absolutely brilliant gigs last year we have invited him and his star-studded Septet back for a third instalment of South African infused Jazz, The impact and influence South African Jazz had British Jazz in the late 60's and 70's was immense with the arrival of a group of brilliant musicians who fled the Apartheid regime and set up home in exile in London. Musicians like Dudu Pukwana, Chris McGregor, Mongezi Feza, Louis Moholo, Harry Miller, Brian Abrahams, Ernest Mothle and Johnny Dyani made a major contribution to the development of British Jazz and their influence can still be heard in today's music.
Tonight Riaan will be taking the South Africa meets BritJazz story a stage further and the programme will include music by the great South African composers Chris McGregor, Louis Moholo, Dudu Pukwana and Johnny Dyani combined with a series of his own distinctive compositions, and there will probably be a few surprises like at the November gig where the band included pieces by the American composers Sun Ra and William Parker.
For this project the multi-talented bassist, composer, arranger, educator and producer Riaan Vosloo has assembled a formidable septet featuring some of the finest musicians on the UK Jazz scene, including the brilliant trombone player Raphael Clarkson, saxophonists Sam Crockatt and Nick Dover, trumperter Simon Beddoe, pianist Dan Moore (Andy Sheppard's Pushy Doctors, Big Top, Pork Chop etc) and on drums we have the excellent Dave Smith (Robert Plant, Cloudmakers, Mark Lockheart's Dreamers).
