Dave Smith (UK) - Drums
Doors Open 7pm / Performance Starts at 7.30pm
This remarkable trio return to the club following their superb gig for the album launch of 'Above Your House' (Babel Records) in February. The music was so good, we had no choice but to ask them back
The band explore the excellent compositions of bassist Henrik Jensen with a strong focus on interplay they blur the lines between the composed and improvised material. An open sound that allows for a lyrical approach but also appreciates the high energy of rhythmic complexity in both swing and groove.
'The release of Above Your House signals the beginning of an exciting new chapter in the career and discography of Danish bassist, Henrik Jensen' 'If the trio attain this level of empathy and interaction in the confines of the recording studio, then the live performances by the trio will surely be the must hear gigs of the year' - Nick Lea, Jazzviews
'Somewhere between the kind of mysteriously loose-swinging Miles quintet sound of the mid'60s the film-noir harmonies and majestic bass-playing of Charlie Haden, and the folksong like themes and patiently subtle impro of so much north European jazz of recent decades, comes the music of Henrik Jensen.' - John Fordham
Originally from Denmark, Henrik Jensen has lived in the UK for over 20 years, since coming here to study at Royal Academy of Music. He has performed extensively as a bandleader and a sideman, and was part of the New Simplicity Trio which was released on Babel. This will be the fourth album as leader. Since 2020, he has lived in Frome in Somerset which is where he reconnected with drummer Dave Smith and is part of an active jazz community, working regularly with Iain Ballamy, Sam Crockatt, Gareth Williams, and John Law. Jensen is also a part of the Bristol based guitarist Steve Banks quintet and works closely with Rebecca Nash and Sara Colman (Ribbons) on their upcoming release.
Esben Tjalve is a prominent Danish pianist and composer, and lived in England for nearly 20 years before returning to his native Denmark. Tjalve is a key member of the trio Human Being Human lead by bassist Torben Bjornskov, and he leads his own group Red Kite which features players such as Jasper Hoiby, Fulvio Sigurta and Hannes Riepler.
Dave Smith is one of the most in demand drummers on the UK Jazz scene and has performed and recorded with Mark Lockheart, Pete King, Cloudmakers Trio (with Jim Hart and Michael Janisch), Anglo-Gambian band Fofoula, Sam Crockatt, Rebecca Nash, Jason Yard, George Crowley and many more. He's also well known outside the jazz world for his work with Robert Plant and the Sensational Space Shifters
