Benjy Sandler is a saxophonist, multi-instrumentalist and composer from North London. A recent University of Bristol graduate, he is currently studying for a Master in Performance at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Recent performance highlights include playing twice at the EFG London Jazz Festival - both with his own co-led quintet and with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra; regular performances with the London Improvisers Orchestra and other free improvising ensembles; and performances at Ronnie Scott's, Cheltenham Jazz Festival, Brecon Jazz Festival and East Finchley Festival.
He has released and appeared on multiple albums, the latest of which attracted the praise of Jazz FM. As well as performing on and composing for acoustic instruments, he likes to explore electronics and has produced pieces that use wavetable synthesis to manipulate acoustic sounds; one of these was featured at the "Polyphonic" exhibition at the Crypt Gallery in Euston in 2023.
Tonight he brings a brand new quartet to the Bristol Music Club, featuring the talents of Olivia Hughes on trombone, Luke Brueck Seeley on drums and Isaac Burland on bass. They'll be playing original compositions by himself and the band, interspersed with plenty of creative free improvisation.
"A bright new name to watch out for" - Stephen Graham, Marlbank
"Sandler's sound is characterised by a warm, lush tone with an elegant vibrato...[he] demonstrates an effortless fluidity with a sophisticated approach to improvisation." - Epigram
